DEGA

Who would ever think that this band would be making such a buzz
now in the HMI after the departures of their guitar player “Didi
Santana” and Roro? Apparently this break up didn’t really affect
the guys because they are still there stronger than ever, on top of
their game and accomplishing things that they didn’t with Didi in
the band. With now Cedric Cauvin as their guitar player, Eric Emile
on the bass and a second keyboard player people are discovering
what Dega has to bring to the public.

1.        Koule Kafe: This song was released during the summer of
2004. This song is like a tribute to all the Caribbean girls but mostly
for Haitian women. Koule kafe meaning the girl has a coffee
completion he also associated other parts of the body with some
fruits “tamarin” for the eyes etc. Right in the middle of the song,
Cedric duplicates didi’s solo on this song (since it came out while
didi was still in the band) but he adds a little spice to it and Carl
Fred backs him up on the keyboard. This song like many others has
a little rap session done in French by Jean Marc Schomberg who
sang a “Mr. Mechant” on the first album. As usual Carl Fred adds
his unique and magic touch to this song to complete it. Very nice
song.

2.        Kisa Poum Fe: This song is the perfect example for a lot of
young kids growing up in Haitian families and Carl Fred himself.
Most of the time, parents in Haiti in general always want their kids
to become doctors lawyers engineers etc. However sometimes the
kids would like to persuade in other fields but actually do what
their parents want them to do in order not to disappoint them.
But some cases occur when the kids become rebel and don’t care
about what their parents think and do what they want to. It’s the
case for this song where he’s saying he wanted to be a Doctor and
suddenly changed his mind to become a musician. His parents and
friends turn their backs on him and he’s explaining them that it’s
not what he wanted so they should forgive him. Very guitar
sequence in the middle of the song where the tempo goes up a
little this text is very well written and speaks the truth for a lot of
people.

3.        Back to me: The title says it all; his girlfriend left him
without telling him anything he’s begging her to come back to her
because he’s not the same without her. He feels betrayed because
he gave his all to her so now he wants her back. Cedric takes over
in this song with a very catchy by simple guitar solo that he repeats
one after the other. Carl Fred follows him with a solo that kind of
looks like the Pam Pam Pam one in the beginning but quickly
changes to get its original pattern. Personally I don’t really like this
song I don’t find anything catchy about it.

4.        Al kwe sa: This song looks a lot like mannigheta from
djakout. Typical konpa song lyric and melody wise. This song talks
about dega’s break from the business when you didn’t really her
from them so they are saying that they were here working for their
fans that support them. The beginning has a crazy solo done by Ti
Ced that kills Carl Fred adds a slogan to that song used by Zin and
Carimi which is the famous “jake jake” The part where it look a lot
like is when they say “yo di dega kraze al kwe sa” with “yo di lajan la
familia fini mannigheta” they are very similar but don’t talk about
the same thing. Carl Fred takes over at some point with a very
groovy solo followed once again by the “jake” slogan. This song is a
guarantee to hype up a crowd

5.        Adieu: This song is almost like back to me but in this case he’
s the one leaving the girl. One of my favorites on this album. He
leaves the girl because she betrayed him, from what I understand
she cheated on him with a guy that was in a better position than
him when the girl always seemed ok with the way he was. There’s
something special for me about that song. The solo wow true
masterpiece dega is definitely “lekol guitaris la” because you don’t
really see that didi is absent in the band Cedric take over
korekteman. As for Carl Fred once again this boy never seems to
amaze me with his solos on better than the other, this one is kind
of complicated because he does it fast but there’s something in it
that makes you want to hear it a lot. Very nice text, melody and
sequence two thumbs up.

6.        I don’t wanna know: Interpretation of the famous rnb song
of Mario Winans done in a konpa version. The words are almost a
translation and the chorus is the exact same thing. After 2
minutes of singing, Roberto Martino from T-Vice takes over with a
solo that I still cannot explain, can’t find the words. It’s the type
to make you jump off your chair and go wild on a dance floor.
Wyclef features also in that song with a little rap sequence in
Creole. At the end Roberto take over again with the solo to finish
the song in beauty.

7.        Without you: This song; it’s funny that I never took my time
to listen to it bit it is one of the nicest if not the nicest on this
album. Another tribute to a girl that left him. This girl left him
maybe because of the fact that he is a musician and he has to
travel a lot and stuff. He’s telling the girl that he’s willing to
change his lifestyle for her just to get her back. At this point the
tempo goes up and the horns and drums take over softly and after
a repetition comes the killer: Cedric blows up with a very catchy
solo that coordinated with a few brakes. Mr. Carl Fred kills that
song also with his solo which is divided into parts with his
trademark sound. This song is sleeping on this album and I can
predict that the live performance kills.

8.        Pap Kitel: This song also came out as a single one year
before the album was out. Pap kitel is the story of him going out
and meeting this drop dead gorgeous girl at the party and no
matter what happens he has to make a move tonight because he
might never see her again. Like koule kafe cedric just duplicated
Didi’s original solo adding a little something at the end but not too
obvious. After a little singing, Mr. Magic takes over with his solo
once again very unique but still groovy and catchy. Despite of its
oldness this song still makes people dance very good job.

9.        Donne moi ton Coeur: This song I believe was written by
Carl Fred when he got married. He wrote this song for his wife the
title meaning give me your heart is sang in French from beginning to
end. His wife sings in that song also and I have to say that I was
amazed by the beauty of her voice, she sounds like a real pro. The
duet is very good and it was a very good move by the couple. It also
came out before the album was out but went under major
modifications. The hors are crazy in that song they replace all
keyboard solos. This song has a solo Jesus it coordinates with a
break in the beginning and Ced continues to kill for a good 30sec
with his touch. This is a true love song also sleeping on that album

10.        Al kwe sa (rmx): The song is the same the only difference is
that shaba from djakout features in the remix with a little gig but
besides that everything else is the same.

11.        I don’t wanna know (rmx): This song is also the same as the
original everything is similar melody, solo. The only difference in this
one is that instead of Wyclef someone else does a little rap session
but in French this time besides that the rest doesn’t change.

12.        Lagi zel nou: Considering that this is their 2003 carnival all I
can say is that it was really groovy and catchy Didi Santana killed in
it.

Overall I am really satisfied with the product. Like I said in the
beginning ever since this album came out, things have been very
good for the band they seem to not only be playing more but the
performances are killers actually. Let’s just hope that they stay like
that and one of these days they will be a top band in the HMI.
Congrats to Dega and crew keep up the good work.
